Icebergs are one of the Big Arctic Five experiences in Greenland, and you can see them by the thousands from air, water, or land at the Ilulissat Ice Fjord. There is no downplaying the fact that, whichever way you see them, the enormous ice sculptures in such numbers are a spectacular sight. But just as the majority of an iceberg lurks unseen beneath the water, there is more to the Ilulissat Ice Fjord than its natural beauty. It tells a profound story of the planet’s history, and it is humbling in a time of climate change debate.
The township of Ilulissat, its name meaning iceberg in Greenlandic, is located on the west coast of Greenland, 250 km north of the Arctic Circle, beautifully situated at the mouth of an almost 60 km long ice fjord, filled with enormous icebergs from the most productive glacier in the northern hemisphere. The combination of a huge ice-sheet and the dramatic sounds of a fast-moving glacial ice-stream calving into a fjord covered by icebergs makes for a dramatic and awe-inspiring natural phenomenon and as such in 2004, Ilulissat Ice Fjord was included on UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites.
There is plenty to do in and around Ilulissat for individual travellers and families alike depending on the time of year you visit.
Summer excursions include private boat trips among the floating ice bergs, preferably in the gleam of the midnight sun, whales are common, watching calving glaciers, helicopter sight seeing, hiking, a trip on to the Ice cap, kayaking and encountering Greenland's Inuit culture. Days are warm with clear blue skies and flowers are in full bloom. Enjoy four-star hotel accommodation and sample the Greenlandic cuisine.
Winter in Greenland is a unique experience, enhanced by the rocky landscape draped in snow and the gigantic icebound mountains. Winter days are typically cold and sunny and northern lights are common with clear skies giving Greenland its "wow" factor. Dressed warmly, a dog sled trip is a truly unique experience and cultural insights into the way of life of the local’s open your mind.
Depending on the time of year and duration of your stay, INLUX can arrange tours to Ilulissat and other parts of Greenland with your travel interests in mind.
